CAT tools vs pure AI translation: when each one wins

A practical guide for LSPs and language teams choosing between traditional CAT software, raw LLM translation, and an AI-native production platform with review workflows.

If your LSP or language team translates client documents every week, you have probably felt the same tension: CAT tools are powerful but heavy; ChatGPT-style AI is fast but fragile. This article explains when each approach wins — and where an AI-native production platform fits.

What pure AI translation does well

Copy-paste or upload-to-LLM workflows shine when:

  • You need a quick internal read of a foreign document
  • The file is mostly plain text without complex layout
  • No one will sign their name on the output
  • Terminology consistency across 20 pages does not matter yet

For those cases, speed is everything. The failure mode is not "wrong words" alone — it is formatting loss, no segment history, and no audit trail when someone asks "who approved this paragraph?"

What traditional CAT tools do well

Desktop or cloud CAT suites (Trados, memoQ, Phrase, etc.) still win when:

  • You run high-volume, repeat business with leverage-based pricing
  • Translators live in segment grids all day
  • You need mature QA profiles, vendor management, and certification workflows
  • Regulatory buyers require toolchain names they already audit

The failure mode is the opposite: license cost, training time, and workflows that assume a professional translator — not a product manager who needs one contract in French by Friday.

The gap BabelBee targets

Many teams are in the middle:

Need Pure AI Traditional CAT AI production platform (BabelBee)
Speed Excellent Moderate Strong
Layout preserved Weak Strong Strong
Second-pass QA None Varies Built-in AI QA + report
Team review Ad hoc Strong Team Verified tier
Glossary / TM Manual copy Native TMX + shared glossary
Time to first project Minutes Days–weeks Minutes

BabelBee is not trying to replace a 50-seat LSP on Trados. It is for translation companies and language teams that outgrew paste-and-pray MT but will not buy CAT seats for every PM, reviewer, and stakeholder.

A simple decision checklist

Choose pure AI when the reader is internal, the layout is simple, and errors are cheap.

Choose CAT when certified human translation at scale is the product you sell.

Choose an AI-native production platform when:

  • Documents are Word/PDF/Excel with real formatting
  • Legal, education, or healthcare wording needs a second check
  • Marketing or compliance wants a named reviewer on flagged segments
  • You already have TMX/glossary assets to reuse

Frequently asked questions

Can BabelBee replace our CAT tool entirely?

For some in-house teams, yes — especially if reviewers are employees, not freelance vendors. Agencies with complex vendor SLAs may still keep CAT for production and use BabelBee for fast-turn internal or client-draft workflows.

Do we still need human review?

For external-facing documents, we recommend at least AI Reviewed (second-model QA) and often Team Verified when terminology or liability matters. AI accelerates the draft; humans own the sign-off.

What about data privacy?

Review your policies before uploading regulated data. BabelBee does not use your documents to train models; see our Privacy Policy and contact sales@babelbee.ai for BAA or enterprise arrangements.
